Choosing the Right Running Shoe


For many years, I have been wearing Brooks running shoes. To be honest, I purchased what fit and never really took the time so understand the importance of “the right” shoe. So when it was time to purchase a new pair of sneakers, I searched for Brooks Ghost running shoes, found the term ” underpronation” in the description and since I had NO clue as to what that meant, I started searching on google!

After some research, I found…There are 3 types- neutral pronation, underpronation and overpronation. Choosing the proper running shoe can make all the difference in your running experience. Having the right shoe will help you run longer, faster and most importantly, more safely with less injury!

Neutral Pronation

Neutral pronation occurs when the foot experiences a normal, healthy amount of pronation. In healthy movement more of the toe area will be used when pushing off than in unhealthy movement.


Underpronation is when the foot impacts the ground and there is not enough of an “inward roll” in the foot’s motion. The weight of the body isn’t transferred at all to the big toe, which forces more weigh on the smaller toes which can’t handle the added weight.


The sneaker on the left was my old Brooks Ghost and the one on the right is my brand spanking new pair. The Brooks Ghost is specifically designed for the underpronator.


It is the excessive inward roll of the foot after landing. This twists the foot, shin and knee and can cause pain in all those areas. If you are an overpronator, you’ll find excessive wear on the inner side of your running shoes.
